Tyler Hansbrough could miss up to two months with a right shin injury, but the Indiana Pacers believe their first-round draft pick will be healthy enough for the start of the season.
The Pacers did not provide details of the injury Friday other than to say the 6-foot-9 forward is expected to miss six to eight weeks ahead of the season. The NBA regular season begins Oct. 27. Indiana said Hansbrough hurt the shin last season, his final year at North Carolina.

Edinson Volquez took the next step toward returning to action when he threw his third bullpen session Friday morning.
The right-hander has been on the disabled list since June 2 with right elbow tendinitis. He threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Wednesday in Los Angeles and progressed to 65 pitches Friday, mixing in changeups with fastballs. Volquez, who is 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA this season, does not have a definite timetable for his return, but he will throw a 75-pitch bullpen Monday in Cincinnati. Assuming that goes well, he will go on a rehab assignment, likely with Triple-A Louisville.

Browns fans come from far and wide to visit the team’s training camp in Berea. For many, it’s an annual pilgrimage — their chance to inspect the new players and coaches from a perspective closer than they’ll ever get.
They’d like to know the daily schedule of practices so they can plan their trips. But so far, the Browns have not released their schedule. They’re one of the few teams not to do so. According to Neal Gulkis, Browns director of public relations, the team hopes to release details of training camp on Wednesday. He attributed the delay to road reconstruction projects surrounding the Browns facility.
“We are still finalizing some things from a logistical and scheduling standpoint, and want to avoid putting things out on a piecemeal basis as much as possible,” Gulkis wrote in an email.

Carson Palmer is certain about two things: Electing not to have invasive “Tommy John” reconstructive surgery on his damaged throwing elbow was a wise decision.
And the Bengals quarterback will not allow Twitter-loving, attention-grabbing wide receiver and teammate Chad Ochocinco to move into his Southern California home so that the two can do some male-bonding and work out in the backyard before Cincinnati’s rookies and veterans report to training camp on July 30.

The 2009 season has been a grind and a disappointment. It has been anything but fun for Victor Martinez and his Indians teammates.
For Martinez, a team leader who wears the successes and setbacks of his club on his sleeve, personal accomplishments have been outweighed by the frustrations of playing for a last-place ballclub. Martinez’s inclusion in the 80th All-Star Game festivities, then, is a welcome distraction from a year otherwise gone awry. He arrived to St. Louis with about a dozen family members, and he’s looking forward to being in an environment where the pressure is momentarily off and the fun flows freely.

Neither side has urgently tried to put pen to paper, but the Reds are nearing deals with their top two selections from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft.
The club has been in extensive talks with agent Dan Horwits, who represents pitchers Mike Leake and Brad Boxberger, the eighth and 43rd overall picks, respectively. Leake, a right-hander taken from Arizona State, was 16-1 with a 1.71 ERA, 24 walks and 162 strikeouts in 19 games this season. A key member of the Sun Devils’ run in the College World Series, he also pitched 142 innings.
