Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro said “it was the right time” to fire manager Eric Wedge.
The official announcement of his dismissal came early this afternoon. Wedge’s staff also was fired. Wedge and his staff will finish the season, which includes a doubleheader against the White Sox today at Progressive Field and four games in Boston beginning Thursday.
“This is obviously an announcement I never envisioned having to make,” Shapiro said. “This is a very difficult day for me personally and professionally because of the type of person Eric is.”
It is not clear exactly when in recent days Shapiro informed Wedge of his decision. Wedge said that he only had wanted to know his status before the Indians departed for Boston.

Eight years had passed since Cincinnati beat Pittsburgh at home, an excruciating streak that symbolized the gulf between the two family-run franchises. It ended with the Bengals’ 23-20 win on Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium, one that felt like a seismic shift.
A day later, players and fans accustomed to being humbled at home were wondering what other breakthroughs are ahead for the Bengals (2-1), one of the NFL’s early surprises. They’ve got a favorable schedule, and their franchise quarterback is back.
“It’s a confidence booster,” said Andre Caldwell, who caught the winning touchdown with 14 seconds left. “We’re letting the world know that we feel we’re a competitive team and we’re something to be reckoned with.”
A lot of it has to do with the quarterback.

James Davis has walked in Jamal Lewis’ shadow for years. On Sunday, the Cleveland Browns’ rookie running back might have to step out of it.
And it might not be a lot of fun.
With Lewis nursing a hamstring injury, Davis, who attended the same Atlanta high school as his more famous teammate, could make his first NFL start when the offensively challenged Browns visit Baltimore to play the Ravens and their bone-bruising defense.
Lewis missed his second consecutive day of practice Thursday, increasing the possibility that he will sit out against the Ravens, his team from 2000 to 2006. The durable 30-year-old, who has made 118 of a possible 122 starts since his rookie season, was injured during last week’s loss at Denver.

The Cincinnati Bengals, no strangers to playing against the 3-4 scheme, essentially handicapped the Green Bay Packers’ defense, forcing the first-year defensive coordinator to abandon most of his pressure packages because it had no answer for journeyman running back Cedric Benson.
The Chicago Bears’ castoff methodically rushed for 141 yards on 29 carries to cripple the Packers in Sunday’s surprising 31-24 loss at Lambeau Field.
Capers’ version of the 3-4 defense is predicated on the unpredictability of its blitz and pressure packages. It’s virtually the same defense the Bengals see six times a year in their division from the Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Things had gone so smoothly for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats during their first two games that they had yet to face a deficit.
Everything they tried on offense seemed to work and their defense was rarely put in a tough spot.
That all changed Saturday night at Oregon State when the Bearcats trailed, 6-0, early in the game because the offense was having a difficult time getting untracked before a raucous crowd a long way from home.
But the Bearcats did what they had to do. They pulled together, relied on their defense for the first time this season, made the offensive plays when they had to, and flew home in the early hours of Sunday morning with an impressive 28-18 victory over the Beavers, who had been ranked No. 24 in the USA Today coaches’ poll.

Just finished with coach Riley briefing … no disrespect to those vaunted Ohio State Buckeyes, No. 11 in this week’s AP Top 25, but …
Asked if Oregon State might be playing the best team in Ohio on Saturday in the No. 17 Cincy Bearcats, Riley answered, “we might be. … this is a very good football team. A very good program.”
True.
Under offensive whizz Brian Kelly, defending Big East champ Cincy is unbeaten and untested, averaging 58 points and a gazillion yards in two games.
Riley said he and his coaches definitely feel an extra jolt of adrenalin this week, preparing for what should be a terrific game – one of the biggest non-conference games at Reser in years.

Grady Sizemore went 2-for-2 in the surgery stat line.
Sizemore underwent successful surgery on Wednesday morning to reinforce an unstable abdominal wall on his lower left side. The condition, known as an athletic pubalgia, was corrected by Dr. Bill Meyers in Philadelphia. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff accompanied Sizemore on the trip to Philly and reported that all went well during the 20-minute procedure, which required a small incision in the region.
So that’s two successful surgeries in the span of a week for Sizemore, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on Sept. 9.

Derek Anderson stood in the middle of the media huddle in the Cleveland Browns’ locker room, then stepped aside for Brady Quinn. Perhaps for good.
Citing a league source, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Wednesday that Browns coach Eric Mangini chose Quinn to be his starting quarterback. NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora confirmed the report.
Earlier in the day, Quinn and Anderson were forced to answer questions about their recently completed competition, which carried through training camp and the preseason but whose winner Mangini wouldn’t publicly reveal.
