Cavaliers’ start has no defense

Posted by GameSetMatch on 30th October 2009

The Cavaliers look vulnerable after two games, mostly because of Shaquille O’Neal’s dead legs and Delonte West’s mental-health break.

O’Neal, as always, is pathologically allergic to the high pick-and-roll or any set that requires his defensive attention on the perimeter.

Teams in need of an open look merely have to set a pick at top of the key extended and O’Neal freezes in place, as if there is an imaginary wall blocking his path.

Andrea Bargnani, the Raptors’ sweet-shooting 7-footer, flourished around O’Neal’s passivity, moving to the perimeter, where he dumped 28 points on the Cavaliers.

Meet Chad Ochocinco, buy his book

Posted by GameSetMatch on 29th October 2009

If there was ever a perfect day to meet Bengals wide receiver, diva, camera hog and author Chad Johnson/Chad Ochocinco/Esteban Ochocinco, it would have to be Halloween, right?

So here’s your chance. Joseph-Beth Booksellers at Rookwood Pavilion is hosting Ochocinco on Saturday at 1 p.m., where he’ll be signing copies of his new book, “Ocho Cinco: What Football and Life Have Thrown My Way.” This is the book with the cover photo of Chad flipping the bird to the camera, or the reader, or the world, depending on your viewpoint

Browns might have to face Steelers star

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th October 2009

The Browns just can’t catch a break when facing the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Strong safety Troy Polamalu, who’s missed four games since suffering a knee injury in the season opener, is expected to play. He practiced Wednesday and Thursday. If he gets through today’s practice without a problem, he’ll be on the field.

“He’s one of the best in the world at what he does,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said of Polamalu. “You can’t quantify his impact on a football game when he plays. If he should play this week, I’m sure it would be a big help to us.”

Browns receivers are probably wishing that Polamalu will need another week to be ready. The receivers dropped an estimated nine passes in the 6-3 win over the Buffalo Bills. It won’t be any easier with the aggressive Polamalu roaming the secondary.

Ochocinco Talks About Hit From Ray Lewis

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th October 2009

Bengals Hold Off Ravens, Take Control Of AFC North
Cincinnati Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco is talking about the hit that sent his helmet across the field against the Ravens last weekend.

During the Bengals’ final drive of the game, Baltimore LB Ray Lewis hit Ochocinco. The impact caused the helmet to fly off the Bengals receiver’s head. Lewis was called for a 15-yard penalty which helped the Bengals march down the field for the game-winning touchdown. The 17-14 win propelled the Bengals into first place in the AFC North.

Ochocinco posted a video blog, talking in great detail about the hit. He says, “As I’m coming down, I look out of the corner of my eye and all I see is this machine coming at me. But the machine has a 52 on his chest.”

Ochocinco and Lewis are friends off the field. The Bengals wide receiver even sent a message to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asking the league to not fine Lewis for the hit.

LeBron James will stay with the Cleveland Cavaliers, thinks former teammate Larry Hughes

Posted by GameSetMatch on 15th October 2009

LeBron James and Larry Hughes were teammates with the Cleveland Cavaliers for 2 1/2 seasons.

It became cliche to say that Hughes would be to James what Scottie Pippen was to Michael Jordan with the Chicago Bulls. That, perhaps, was unfair to Hughes, since the versatile Pippen is ranked among the NBA’s all-time greats.

Hughes, now with the New York Knicks, is featured in a story by Frank Isola of the New York Daily News

Bearcats Look To Continue Domination Of Bulls

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th October 2009

That’s right, the number 8 (or 9 depending on what poll you look at ) UC Bearcats are coming down to Tampa to take on your 21st ranked Bulls this Thursday night for a Big East tilt featured on ESPN.

The last time these teams met was also featured on ESPN. I’m sure Bulls fans can remember. It was a game that saw the Bearcats “upset” the number 23 team in the country at the time, 24-10. The Bearcats used that win to take five straight in route to the Big East Championship and a birth in the Orange Bowl. Following their loss, the Bulls lost two of three down the stretch but rallied to beat Memphis in the much anticipated magicJack St. Petersburg Bowl.

Regarding this year’s game; Bulls fans should remember who Tony Pike is. He was the guy who played last season with a soft cast protecting his surgically repaired broken left arm and threw for 281 yards and two touchdowns. After UC’s drubbing of Miami of Ohio two weeks ago, Pike has thrown a touchdown pass in 15 straight games.

Pryor’s first goal is winning, Tressel says

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th October 2009

Jim Tressel shares the concerns of Buckeye Nation about his team’s offense and the production of quarterback Terrelle Pryor, but the Ohio State football coach today said he and Pryor share one important characteristic as the Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0) sit atop the Big Ten standings with Iowa (6-0, 2-0).

“To me the thing that is probably the No.1 trait I see in Terrelle is, first, he wants to be on a winning team,” Tressel said. “So if you’re doing what might lead to winning, that’s No.1.”

Despite Pryor’s six interceptions — two more than he had as a freshman all of last season — and despite his sometimes off-target throws, he has for the most part taken care of the ball, Tressel said. It’s just that thus far, halfway through this season, there haven’t been those yardage explosions, either by him or the offense, that many were anticipating.

“I don’t think Terrelle would enjoy rushing for 110 (yards) and throwing for 300 and being 1-5, being 2-4,” Tressel said. “I don’t think that would interest him.”

Benson leads Bengals, NFL

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th October 2009

Ladies and gentlemen, the NFL’s leading rusher:

Bengals running back Cedric Benson.

After Sunday’s historic 120-yard effort in the 17-14 win over the Ravens, Benson has 487 yards and a six-yard lead over Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson.

Numbers were also on the mind of Marvin Lewis, now the Bengals head coach, and architect of the Ravens’ fierce pride in their ability to stop the run at the turn of the century.

In the visitors locker room at M&T Bank Stadium, Lewis leered at public relations man Jack Brennan, pointed at Benson and asked, “How many did he get?” Told 120 yards, Lewis lit up and walked over to Benson to give him a high five.

“That’s what I’m talking about,” Lewis said. “That’s what I’m talking about.”

Browns win ugly, beat Buffalo 6-3

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th October 2009

Backup kicker Billy Cundiff hit an 18-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining Sunday, giving Cleveland a 6-3 victory over Buffalo for its first win under coach Eric Mangini.

Cundiff’s kick ended a display of offensive ineptitude between the Browns and Bills in a how-bad-was-it game.

Cundiff also made a 24-yard field goal in the second quarter, while punter Dave Zastudil was the Browns’ MVP. Zastudil downed seven of nine punts inside the Bills 20, including three inside the 5. Zastudil also providedthe game-turning play when Roscoe Parrish muffed a rolling punt. The Browns recovered at the Bills 16 to set up the winning score.

The Bills (1-4) have lost to winless teams in consecutive weeks following a 38-10 defeat at Miami.

Blue Jackets: Brassard, Vermette switch lines

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 8th October 2009

Only two games into the season, Blue Jackets center Derick Brassard is getting a breather.
When the Blue Jackets face the San Jose Sharks at 10:30 tonight in HP Pavilion, Brassard’s previously held spot on the No. 1 line between wingers Rick Nash and Kristian Huselius will be filled by veteran center Antoine Vermette, while Brassard will slide to the No. 2 line with wingers Nikita Filatov and Jake Voracek.
Brassard, 22, is the oldest member of his new line, which he dubbed the “Young Guns.” He, Voracek (20) and Filatov (19) represent three of the organization’s past four first-round draft picks.

“When you look at the Sharks first line, (center Joe) Thornton is huge, and they’re going to match against Nasher’s line,” he said. “Vermy is a really strong player.
“This might give me a little break to get my legs going and get my game going.”
In previous Blue Jackets’ seasons, a 2-0 start would have precluded even minor lineup tinkering.
But expectations are higher this season, and Blue Jackets coach Ken Hitchcock expected significantly more puck possession and scoring chances from the Huselius-Brassard-Nash line than he saw in the first two games, which were victories over Minnesota and Vancouver.
