St. Louis starting pitcher Chris Carpenter thought the baseballs might have been sabotaged — “I don’t know if they’re doing this on purpose here … but someone’s going to get hurt” — yet just a few dressing stalls away, teammate Albert Pujols had no such problem:
“I’m not a pitcher, man … I liked them just fine.”
Regardless, there was an Opening Day casualty at Great American Ball Park, Monday, April 5, and it was all Pujols’ fault.
The three-time National League MVP — showing why he is the best player in baseball — hit two home runs, went 4-for-5 and, in part, was responsible for teammate Yadier Molina’s grand slam as the Cards ruined the Reds opener, 11-6.
“There is nobody better playing the game than him,” Cards manager Tony La Russa said. “… You got another example.”
With the Findlay Market Parade, pregame concerts, the flyover of F-16s, nobody does Opening Day better than Cincinnati. And Monday — with 78-degree sunshine, the fifth-largest crowd in GABP history and Reds starter Aaron Harang striking out the first two Cards he faced — everything seemed perfect.

Brandon Phillips – the last man standing in Cincinnati’s season of unending injuries – drove in three runs, and Homer Bailey shut out Pittsburgh for six innings on Sunday, setting up a 6-0 victory as the NL Central’s two more forlorn franchises ended the season together.
The Pirates finished their 17th straight losing season, while the Reds ended their ninth in a row.
Phillips was the Reds’ only regular starting player who avoided the disabled list throughout the season. He had an RBI double in the first off Jeff Karstens (4-6), a run-scoring groundout and another RBI double.

By the time Joey Votto slugged his go-ahead home run on Tuesday night, the lights at Miller Park should have long been powered off. And 29,481 Brewers fans should have already emptied the parking lot disappointed after an easy Reds win.
Easy? That word has rarely been in Cincinnati’s lexicon this season. The club’s 8-6 win in 13 innings definitely came the hard way.
“Whew. Boy, that was a tough way to win,” wiped-out Reds manager Dusty Baker said. “But it’s OK, we won.”
It was a 6-6 game, and with former Reds reliever Todd Coffey (2-3) in his third inning of work, Votto led off the top of the 13th by powering a 3-1 fastball to the opposite field just over the left-field fence for his team-leading 19th homer of the season.

Brandon Phillips may have a sore left hand but it’s not going to stop him from playing. After he missed Sunday’s game against the Nationals, Phillips was back in the lineup for Tuesday’s game against the Giants.
“It hurts,” Phillips said. “But if I can play with a broken thumb, if I can play with an injured finger, I can play with an injured wrist.”
Phillips hurt his hand in Saturday’s game, when he was hit by a pitch by Nationals starter J.D. Martin in the sixth inning of a 10-6 loss. He had to leave the game because of the injury. Drew Sutton filled in for Phillips on Sunday.
“I love this game too much to sit out,” Phillips said. “I feel like the game that we lost Sunday was my fault.”

Reds manager Dusty Baker has job security for the remainder of this season and in 2010.
Reds owner/CEO Bob Castellini let it be known that Baker would be back.
“Absolutely,” Castellini told the Cincinnati Enquirer before Wednesday’s 4-0 win over the Cubs.
Baker is owed $4 million in 2010, the final year of his contract.
The fifth-place Reds are 46-61 and 11 1/2 games out in the National League Central and just one game above the last-place Pirates. Before Wednesday’s victory, Cincinnati had lost a season-high eight in a row and 14 out of 15 games.

The type of elbow surgery that Reds starting pitcher Edinson Volquez needed on Monday was the one everyone feared.
Volquez underwent Tommy John ligament replacement surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament and torn flexor mass in his right elbow. Dr. Tim Kremchek, the Reds’ medical director, performed the 90-minute procedure. Volquez will likely miss 12 months, which wouldn’t have him pitching again until late into the 2010 season, and that’s being optimistic.

Edinson Volquez took the next step toward returning to action when he threw his third bullpen session Friday morning.
The right-hander has been on the disabled list since June 2 with right elbow tendinitis. He threw a 45-pitch bullpen session Wednesday in Los Angeles and progressed to 65 pitches Friday, mixing in changeups with fastballs. Volquez, who is 4-2 with a 4.35 ERA this season, does not have a definite timetable for his return, but he will throw a 75-pitch bullpen Monday in Cincinnati. Assuming that goes well, he will go on a rehab assignment, likely with Triple-A Louisville.
