Rebuilding is essential in sports. Every team does it at one point, and the Indians seem to be doing it right now. But are they really? It seems as if the Indians are a staple for grooming players that go on to have equal or better success elsewhere. Players like Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Cliff Lee, and C.C. Sabathia all excel for the Indians. But for most of them, they look for winning success elsewhere. Along with the players listed above, there are laundry lists of stars that have played for the Indians in the past ten years or so.

But now the Indians find themselves in the basement of the MLB. No, they are clearly not the worst team, and should not be considered so. But, they are not exactly in favorable position. The Indians have little to look forward to for the future. And when the exciting future gets here, they will be on their way out before the fans of Cleveland realize it. No wonder why LeBron James wore a Yankees hat to a playoff game in Cleveland.

GIVING THANKS — Nothing wrong with starting the season by being thankful.

''I'm thankful I'm alive and for everything I have,'' Indians manager Manny Acta said. ''I'm lucky to have the chance to win or lose a major-league game. I could be managing in an independent league.''

IT'S BEEN A WHILE — This is the 70th anniversary of the only Opening Day no-hitter in history.

Bob Feller achieved the feat on April 16, 1940, against the Chicago White Sox. Feller, now 91, attended Monday's game and will be honored at a lunch today in downtown Chicago.
Brandon Phillips - the last man standing in Cincinnati's season of unending injuries - drove in three runs, and Homer Bailey shut out Pittsburgh for six innings on Sunday, setting up a 6-0 victory as the NL Central's two more forlorn franchises ended the season together. The Pirates finished their 17th straight losing season, while the Reds ended their ninth in a row.

Phillips was the Reds' only regular starting player who avoided the disabled list throughout the season. He had an RBI double in the first off Jeff Karstens (4-6), a run-scoring groundout and another RBI double.

Wedge and his staff will finish the season, which includes a doubleheader against the White Sox today at Progressive Field and four games in Boston beginning Thursday.

“This is obviously an announcement I never envisioned having to make,” Shapiro said. “This is a very difficult day for me personally and professionally because of the type of person Eric is.”
It is not clear exactly when in recent days Shapiro informed Wedge of his decision.
Grady Sizemore went 2-for-2 in the surgery stat line.
Sizemore underwent successful surgery on Wednesday morning to reinforce an unstable abdominal wall on his lower left side. The condition, known as an athletic pubalgia, was corrected by Dr. Bill Meyers in Philadelphia. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff accompanied Sizemore on the trip to Philly and reported that all went well during the 20-minute procedure, which required a small incision in the region.

So that's two successful surgeries in the span of a week for Sizemore, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on Sept. 9.

By the time Joey Votto slugged his go-ahead home run on Tuesday night, the lights at Miller Park should have long been powered off. And 29,481 Brewers fans should have already emptied the parking lot disappointed after an easy Reds win.
Easy? That word has rarely been in Cincinnati's lexicon this season. The club's 8-6 win in 13 innings definitely came the hard way.

"Whew. Boy, that was a tough way to win," wiped-out Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "But it's OK, we won."

It was a 6-6 game, and with former Reds reliever Todd Coffey (2-3) in his third inning of work, Votto led off the top of the 13th by powering a 3-1 fastball to the opposite field just over the left-field fence for his team-leading 19th homer of the season.
