By throwing four wild pitches Monday, Jake Westbrook tied a Indians franchise record that had been done three times before.
Sam McDowell was the first to do it, in 1961. He did it again three years later, and Steve Hargan heaved four wild pitches in 1965.
GIVING THANKS — Nothing wrong with starting the season by being thankful.
”I’m thankful I’m alive and for everything I have,” Indians manager Manny Acta said. ”I’m lucky to have the chance to win or lose a major-league game. I could be managing in an independent league.”
IT’S BEEN A WHILE — This is the 70th anniversary of the only Opening Day no-hitter in history.
Bob Feller achieved the feat on April 16, 1940, against the Chicago White Sox. Feller, now 91, attended Monday’s game and will be honored at a lunch today in downtown Chicago. Feller’s sister, Marguerite, who lives in metro Chicago and watched her borther’s no-hitter, also will be at today’s lunch.

Grady Sizemore went 2-for-2 in the surgery stat line.
Sizemore underwent successful surgery on Wednesday morning to reinforce an unstable abdominal wall on his lower left side. The condition, known as an athletic pubalgia, was corrected by Dr. Bill Meyers in Philadelphia. Head athletic trainer Lonnie Soloff accompanied Sizemore on the trip to Philly and reported that all went well during the 20-minute procedure, which required a small incision in the region.
So that’s two successful surgeries in the span of a week for Sizemore, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow on Sept. 9.

Indians starter Aaron Laffey was under constant duress on Sunday and Cleveland’s offense wasn’t effective outside of one key inning.
This mattered not in a surprisingly easy 7-4 victory over the Twins at the Metrodome.
Laffey danced in and out of trouble against a dangerous Minnesota lineup, but he held the vaunted duo of Joe Mauer and Justin Morneau hitless while escaping from danger in big spots.
How was he able to silence the M&M boys?
“Luck,” Laffey quipped.

The 2009 season has been a grind and a disappointment. It has been anything but fun for Victor Martinez and his Indians teammates.
For Martinez, a team leader who wears the successes and setbacks of his club on his sleeve, personal accomplishments have been outweighed by the frustrations of playing for a last-place ballclub. Martinez’s inclusion in the 80th All-Star Game festivities, then, is a welcome distraction from a year otherwise gone awry. He arrived to St. Louis with about a dozen family members, and he’s looking forward to being in an environment where the pressure is momentarily off and the fun flows freely.

Manager Eric Wedge said he’s going to make an effort to get Ryan Garko into the Indians’ lineup more consistently going forward.
That’s music to the ears of Garko, who has never started more than four games in a row this season and has started four consecutively just six times. Garko is hoping to remain in the lineup Friday, when the Indians open up a three-game, holiday weekend set against the A’s at Progressive Field.

Injured Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez got the good news he was seeking, even if it came tagged with a “but.”
Volquez was cleared to resume throwing again, but he has to start his program over from square one. “That’s bad,” said Volquez, who is on the disabled list with right elbow tendinitis. He was examined by team medical director Dr. Tim Kremchek on Monday. Volquez will long toss on Friday from a distance of 60 feet and his progress will be monitored even closer than before by Kremchek. His throwing program was close to having him back on a mound until it was halted last week when an MRI exam revealed inflammation in the muscle where the right forearm meets the elbow.
